HAMPSHIRE SHAKESPEARE YOUNG COMPANY PRESENTS HAMLET
July 26, 2004 - Amherst, MA
Picture Fortress Elsinore some time in the distant future, an island of civilization in the midst of a world made
desolate by the ravages of high-tech warfare. Defense of the homeland against rogue warriors and stateless marauders
becomes key, and the paranoid population easily accepts a ruler who promises to protect them, though it is at the cost
of their liberty. This is the world of Hamlet as presented by the Hampshire Shakespeare Young Company, a group of more
than 20 actors ranging in age from 17 to 10, all of whom have received training with HSC. The production features
Brooke Steinhauser as Hamlet, and is under the direction of Lucinda Kidder.
This last show of the company’s Shakespeare Under the Stars summer season opens on Friday, July 30, and runs Saturday
and Sunday, closing August 1. Curtain time is 7:00 PM, and audience members are encouraged to come early to enjoy a
picnic supper on the grounds of the Hartsbrook School at 193 Bay Road in Hadley, the site of the performances.
All seating is general admission, with early comers seated first. All performances proceed on a weather-permitting basis.
Umbrellas are offered to the audience in the event of a sudden downpour or light rain. We perform inside if there is
torrential rain, and give vouchers to those who would prefer to return for a future outdoor performance. All tickets
for the Young Company production of Hamlet are $5. For further information, visit the Company’s web site
(www.hampshireshakespeare.org) or call 413-788-4750.
The venue at The Hartsbrook School is handicapped-accessible. Chairs are provided, and audience members can also
choose to sit on the grass. For the convenience of theater-goers, Picnics To Go – special picnic suppers prepared
by Flayvors of Cook Farm - may be ordered by calling 413-584-2224. Out-of-town guests can reserve tickets at the same
time they book rooms through the Hampshire Hospitality Group Valley Vacations Web site (http://valleyvacations.net).
Hampshire Shakespeare Company is grateful for the generous support of 2004 Season Sponsors WFCR, The Spa! Internet,
and Florence Savings Bank.
